Project Scope:
This boundary church wall had been indentified on an annual survey as being in need of repair. Ivy, growing on, around and through it for some time, had weakened the integrity of the wall to the point it was deemed dangerous as it was retaining land.
In addition, whilst on site, we identified that the existing oak gates, which had already had previous repair work, were in desperate need of replacement.
The works:
Once the ivy was removed we were able to properly assess the condition of the existing wall and brick copings. Unfortunately, the majority of the copings, lower plinth stretcher course and brickwork below had perished and required removing.
The wall was taken down to a suitable level and reclaimed bricks sourced to match the existing brickwork. We cleaned off any existing bricks which could be re-used, and re-built the wall with suitable sand and cement mortar. New plinth stretchers and coping bricks were sourced through a local reclamation yard and the wall was completed.
The gate:
Originally, we had hoped that it would be possible to re-use/restore some of the existing sections of oak within the gates. However, once the gate was taken to our on-site workshop it was apparent that this was not feasible and we were instructed to replicate the gates using new timber.
We sourced new European oak and were able to replicate the exisitng gates, salvaging and restoring the existing metalwork. The gates were treated to two coats of external wood treatment, and re-hung. We received extremely positive feedback from the local residents.
